In the 1860 census for Franklin Township, Adams County, Henry Deardorff listed his occupation as "gentleman."

The term as used in the 19th century indicated a man of means, one whose land or business holdings, investments, or inheritance provided sufficient income to eliminate the need for additional employment or earnings.
