Whether a reprieve from summer's heat or an escape from winter's cold – board games like parcheesi and checkers were favorite pastimes for my family.
Sometimes we got angry with one another ("You cheated!"), sometimes we felt generous and left one another win, but mostly we laughed and made up rules and played until salt and pepper shakers appeared and we finally relinquished the table to dinner.
I will spare you the speech about how modern technology has made communicating with our children and parents impersonal and oddly abbreviated. I will, however, offer this reminder: time truly does fly by. So move the laptop, pile the mail on the floor, throw your scrapbooking supplies in a drawer and use your dining room table the way God intended: play a board game. 'Tis the gift of one another's company that means the most.
