"Huckster"

In the 1900-1902 "Directory of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania" we find the following entry:

Robert Erskine
825 Violet Street
Norristown
Huckster
While "huckster" might today have a negative connotation, in this instance it merely referred to one who sold goods door-to-door, normally running established routes.

During the Civil War, when militia units held mandatory drills called muster days, hucksters were often on hand to sell lemonade, small-beer, and hard liquor to the locals who, making a day of the event, turned out in large numbers to watch.
