Among the Montour County marriage records are 23-year-old Ellen Neville and 29-year-old Lawrence Connelly. When he married on October 19, 1885, Lawrence's occupation was noted as "rougher in mill."

In an iron works (and Danville, Montour County, was an iron town) the rougher's job was to reduce misshapen steel slabs to specified dimensions out of which bars, strips and flats were made.

It was then the job of the finisher to roll these objects to specified gauge and shape.
